An opportunity that may come only once in a lifetime. Such will be the opening concert of the 14th Rudolf Firku\u0161n\u00fd Piano Festival, at which Evgeny Kissin<\/strong> and Sir Andr\u00e1s Schiff<\/strong> will appear together on one stage, each at his own piano. The festive evening in the Dvo\u0159\u00e1k Hall of the Rudolfinum will open with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart<\/strong>\u2019s Sonata for Two Pianos in D major<\/em>. The programme will then continue with two beautiful yet rarely performed works by the German Romantic composer Robert Schumann<\/strong> \u2013 the Andante and Variations in B-flat major for Two Pianos<\/em> and Pictures from the East for Piano Four Hands,<\/em> inspired by the poet Friedrich R\u00fcckert\u2019s translations of Arabic poetry. The second half of the evening will be illuminated by Bed\u0159ich Smetana<\/strong>\u2019s beloved Vltava,<\/em> and the concert will culminate in Anton\u00edn Dvo\u0159\u00e1k<\/strong>\u2019s Slavonic Dances<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

An artist who first captured international attention at the age of twelve, he is admired by audiences and critics alike for his impeccable technique and profound insight into the repertoire. He has collaborated with the world\u2019s leading orchestras and conductors, including the Berlin Philharmonic with Herbert von Karajan and the New York Philharmonic, to which he returns this April under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel. Highlights of his career include his debut at the BBC Proms in 1990, opening Carnegie Hall\u2019s centenary season, and regular appearances at the Salzburg Festival.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n

Born in Budapest, Sir Andr\u00e1s Schiff<\/strong> rightly enjoys a reputation as one of the most distinguished musicians of our time. His remarkable career as pianist and conductor has included a residency with the New York Philharmonic, regular appearances at the BBC Proms and the Salzburg Festival, and a number of extraordinary projects, among them performances of all Beethoven\u2019s piano sonatas and the complete piano works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Joseph Haydn, Franz Schubert and B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k. \u201cHe cast a spell from which one could sense the entire hall subsequently awaken,\u201d wrote the British newspaper The Independent<\/em> about the atmosphere of his concerts.<\/p>\n

How will these two powerful musical personalities \u2013 artists we most often encounter as soloists \u2013 combine their artistry and guide us through the music of the 18th and 19th centuries? The answer awaits on 3 November at the Rudolfinum.<\/p>\n
