Grigory Sokolov is regarded as a figure and stylistically as the last pianist of the great Russian era. He works with sound masterfully, choosing such tempos as will allow him to envelop each tone in silence. He seldom grants journalists an interview, so we know very little about his life. Even this “mystery” is characteristic of him… Also corresponding to this is the atmosphere during the concert itself, when the lighting in the hall is dimmed considerably at the pianist’s request. He has never in his life made a single studio recording because of the meaning he sees in the uniqueness of the performance at every concert.
